1a. The Bakery was out of ingredients so they couldn’t make any chocolate cupcakes.

1b. The Bakery was out of chocolate cupcakes.

1a entails 1b because if they ran out of ingredients to make chocolate cupcakes then it has to be true that the Bakery was all out of chocolate cupcakes. But if the bakery was all out of the chocolate cupcakes it does not necessarily mean that they ran out of ingredients. The baker could be home sick or they may have just sold out. Maybe they burnt that batch!

The words I chose that have the same denotation is “sister’ and “sibling”. I chose these words because they could mean the same thing or something different, I could say “I have two sisters” and “I have two siblings” and the sentences could be saying the same thing, or “siblings” could mean brothers or a brother and a sister. When someone says they have a sister, we automatically know what gender they are talking about when they are referring to a sibling. When someone says they have a sibling or siblings, we don’t know whether they are referring to a brother or a sister.

The pair of words that I chose with the same denotation and different expressive meanings are “mom” and “mother.”  They both usually refer to a child’s female parent, but they are used in very different situations.  Using the word “mom” seems very warm and gives a feeling of love and affection towards this person.  The word “mother” seems very cold and makes you think that the relationship may be very distant or strained.  “Mother” can also seem like a clinical term, anytime that you have to fill out forms that would ask for this kind of information, the word used is always “mother,” never “mom.”  The way this word is used in this situation may also be a reason that it seems so cold and formal.
